I hate Jimmy Page

Actually I don't, I hate Thursdays at uni though, which is essentially the "play crappy music very loudly" day. Sometimes we luck out and get the Cure, other times we lose and get random bad dance music. Like today. At least the Chinese music you could put earphones on and listen to something else over the top of :-(

I was quite stunned by this article where a senior Anglican minister wrote to Justice Michael Kirby (of whom I suspect you may recall I am something of a fan) telling him to repent his wicked wicked ways. The letters (PDF) in particular are really quite an amazing read. I think Justice Kirby was quite restrained in his responses given the tone of the letters sent to him, which is to his credit (although he possibly loses a point by invoking Godwin's Law, but let's not make too light on what is a serious subject).

I'm not Christian but it really is some of these selected interpretations that suit peoples' particular prejudices that makes me abhor the church as an institution. No Christians today believe the world is flat, or that adulterers should be stoned (along with many other now-considered "over the top" reactions to things), so why should they make an exception for treatment of homosexuality, which is something that is now well-accepted by science as not being a "choice" as many homophobes would have you believe? It just screams intolerance and exclusion, which is certainly not something that fits in with the doctrines preached by Jesus. I just don't understand how that is reconciled by practising Christians who hold this view.

/rant off, back to work!

I don't think you should underestimate the Flat Earthers. Here's some stuff from a pamphlet put out by the founder of their society (according to Wikipedia):

We maintain that what is called 'Science' today and 'scientists' consist of the same old gang of witch doctors, sorcerers, tellers of tales, the 'Priest-Entertainers' for the common people. 'Science' consists of a weird, way-out occult concoction of gibberish theory-theology...unrelated to the real world of facts, technology and inventions, tall buildings and fast cars, airplanes and other Real and Good things in life; technology is not in any way related to the web of idiotic scientific theory. ALL inventors have been anti-science. The Wright brothers said: "Science theory held us up for years. When we threw out all science, started from experiment and experience, then we invented the airplane." By the way, airplanes all fly level on this Plane earth.

Are you sure that it's not your atheist "science" that is separating you from the real world of tall buildings and fast cars?

More seriously, I find the letters depressing. The minister isn't going to change his viewpoint and is, in fact, not being particularly outrageous as far as I know with respect to the Anglican line regarding homosexuality. For his part, Justice Kirby clearly finds the exchange more tiring and aggravating than interesting (or even worthwhile). Indeed, neither side seems particularly interested in having a debate. Kirby's reference to Kinsey is also unfortunate, because his data are now disputed (not to mention 50 years old).

Yeah, I agree, though it's one thing to think someone's gonna go to hell for something, and another to go out of your way to tell them they are (and in vaguely insulting terms no less).

And I think despite Kinsey's data, it's pretty well established that homosexuality isn't just a fad :)

"It just screams intolerance and exclusion, which is certainly not something that fits in with the doctrines preached by Jesus"

Wellllll, Jesus didn't stand up and read out the entire Bible out loud. If I were one of the wacky Chasers I'd pull out the clips whereby crazy Leviticus bits reveals people who eat prawns or need glasses have essentially committed mortal sins.

But the reality is, I'm not, and neither are you. The SCIENTOLOGISTS and infinite other religious groups (including the Dalai Lama, yes, I saw the John Safran clips) have either marginalised, ignored or pestered based upon these concepts for the last X years. But like feminism, it only has effect while non-believers actually pay attention to their work and believe in it. For these reasons among many, I urge you to revert to the Jay Leno school of humourous one liners and moving on with our lives.
